The $300,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), the feature race for two-year-olds at Randwick’s Sydney Cup meeting on Saturday, was decided in a thrilling photo-finish with the Peter Snowden-trained Skilled coming away with the win.

Commands colt Skilled ($10) chased down leader Sasa ($8) in the final strides to win by a head with Snowden’s other runner Divorces ($15) a mere neck back for third.

A photo finish was consulted to decide the winner, with the victory also protested by Sasa’s jockey Tye Angland who said early interference by Skilled forced his mount to race three wide, which lead to his filly’s defeat.

Stewards soon rejected the protest and Skilled’s win stood, giving excited young hoop Joshua Parr his first Group 1 win after being narrowly beaten aboard Skilled two starts back by Yosei in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes.

Snowden too was over the moon as the Champagne Stakes victory broke a frustrating succession of 14 black type second placings this Sydney autumn carnival.

After sitting just off the pace, Parr and Skilled made their winning move on the straight, surging up the middle to deny Sasa the win in the closing stages.

Skilled has now saluted in three of his six race starts earning $388,350 in prizemoney to date.

Other feature Group 1 races at Randwick on Saturday included the $400,000 Sydney Cup (3200m) won by possible Melbourne Cup contender Jessicabeel, the $350,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes where Road To Rock charged home in a commanding win, and the $300,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) taken out by Hot Danish giving the mare her maiden elite level win.

At Randwick on Saturday, the ever-improving Sacred Choice, ridden by Michael Rodd, secured a black type victory when the four-year-old claimed an upset win in the $150,000 Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m).

Trained by Warwick Farm-based mentor Joseph Pride, Sacred Choice went out at $11 and surprised many by narrowly defeating the hot $2.50 favourite and her half-sister, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Gold Water, by a half-head in a thrilling photo-finish.

Strawberry Field ($8.50) was an even tighter margin away in third, a mere short half-head, followed by stablemate, John O’Shea’s imported galloper Music Review ($26) in fourth.

Gold Water led throughout but was beaten in the final strides by Sacred Choice, who pulled out a dazzling late burst to run down the favourite and come away with the win.

Carrying an extra 1kg than the winner, Gold Water was found wanting inside the final 30 metres after a fast paced race at the front.

Coming off a disappointing fourth place to Messenger in the Epona Stakes (1900m), a month’s rest between runs, step down in distance and wearing blinkers for the first time seemed to do the trick for Sacred Choice in the Emancipation Stakes.

The winning Choisir mare, Sacred Choice, now has seven wins to her name from 20 career starts with her total prizemoney earned reaching $306,890.

Despite the win tempting connections to keep the in-form mare racing this season in the Brisbane winter carnival, Sacred Choice will instead be sent to the paddock in preparation for a hopefully impressive spring campaign.

Classy runner-up Gold Water, now coming off three frustrating second placings, will continue on to the coveted Queensland races with Waterhouse looking at features including the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 12th , the $500,000 Group 1 Winter Stakes (1400m) on June 26, or even the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) held earlier on for the four-year-old mare.

It was an elite race programme held at Randwick on Saturday, boasting four great Group 1 races including the $400,000 Sydney Cup (3200m) won by Jessicabeel, and the $350,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes where the Anthony Cummings-trained Road To Rock claimed victory.

Detailed results on all of the excellent Randwick races that were held on the final race meeting of the Sydney autumn carnival can also be found at Races.com.au, one of Australia’s leading Group race information sites.

On Saturday last start Doncaster Mile runner-up Road To Rock became a dual Group 1 winner when he won the $350,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

Prepared by master mentor Anthony Cummings, Road To Rock went onto the field as the hot $3.30 favourite following Friday’s scratching of Rangirangdoo.

The 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was to be a rematch between the top two Doncaster Mile performers, but the scratching made it a one horse race with Road To Rock’s comprehensive win.

After sitting back early on, Road To Rock charged to the front halfway down the home straight and held on to defeat the Chris Waller-trained Triple Honour ($12) by a widening two lengths.

AJC third placegetter Monaco Consul made it back-to-back Group 1 third place finishes, crossing the line another three-quarters of a length away from Triple Honour.

Road To Rock, a son of Encosta De Lago, was again ridden by the experienced and skilful Damien Oliver. Oliver has now started a three week suspension from riding after he was found to have weighed in a kilo overweight when he rode Road To Rock to a narrow defeat in the Doncaster Mile.

Oliver will, however, be back in the saddle by May 16 when five-year-old Road To Rock seeks glory overseas in the $3 million Singapore International Airlines Cup (2000m).

In six wins from 34 starts, Road To Rock has now secured over $1.15 million in prizemoney.

Saturday at Randwick was the final meeting of the coveted Sydney autumn carnival and other highlight events included the $400, 000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) won by Jessicabeel, now looking at a run in the 2010 Melbourne Cup.

Dariana claimed the $125,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on Saturday when the filly exceeded her pre-race favourite expectations.

Trained by Bart Cummings, who is at St Vincent’s Private Hospital due to an illness, Dariana started slow but came home strong on the last day of the Sydney Racing Carnival.

Trained by Bart Cummings, Dariana started slow but came home strong on the last day of the Sydney Racing Carnival.

Al Dhafra was the favourite heading into the 2010 Frank Packer Plate, but the Guy Walter-trained gelding was disappointing on the Royal Randwick Racecourse and finished fourth and heads to the paddock for a spell.

Euphemism, trained by Peter Snowden finished second by half-a-length while Viking Hero rounded out the top three finishers.

Dariana looks set to travel to Queensland and compete in the Brisbane racing carnival, with the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) on the 5th of June a strong possibility, with two wins from just six races as the filly sets out her first campaign.

Also taking place on Saturday alongside the 2010 Frank Packer Plate was the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m).

It was a thrilling affair at the Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday as Jessicabeel came from well back to claim the prestigious $400,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).

The 2010 Sydney Cup headlined the day’s proceedings which culminated the Autumn Racing Carnival, and Craig Newitt certainly had a game plan for the winning John O’Shea-trained mare, settling her back in the field and timing the finish perfectly.

Craig Newitt certainly had a game plan for the winning John O’Shea-trained mare, settling her back in the field and timing the finish perfectly.

It was a fantastic finish which resulted in a mare’s cup quinella, with Divine Rebel three-quarters of a length behind in second – the mare’s second consecutive runner up spot in the event, while Harris Tweed was a further length behind in third.

The triumphant mare started badly, but given her innate ability to stay strong over the long distance, came good when she outstayed the rest of the field after a fabulous turn of foot in the tail end of the race.

Going into the race, Precedence was topping the odds, and while the Bart Cummings-trained gelding started strong and led the field, could not maintain the pace and crossed the line last, while Zavite was another contender and made the same mistake finishing a spot ahead of Precedence.

With such an impressive form over the 3,200 metre race, the most logical path for Jessicabeel will be the 2010 Melbourne Cup

Also taking place on Saturday alongside the 2010 Sydney Cup was the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), the Group 1 Champagne Stakes and the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

Hot Danish, trained by Les Bridge finally claimed her first Group 1 win on Saturday when she took out the 2010 All Aged Stakes.

Forming part of the Sydney Cup Day at the Royal Randwick Racecourse, the $300,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) saw 11 horses compete as the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival came to a close.

Hot Danish led all the way on Saturday, and executed the race perfectly with Tim Clark aboard.

Hot Danish led all the way on Saturday, and executed the race perfectly with Tim Clark aboard, after missing out on the coveted spot at the top level seven times previously.

The classy mare’s prize money is now over the extravagant $1.5million mark, after reaching expectations as she went into the race as favourite.

The top three finishers were all mares and fillies, as females dominated the Randwick track all day, with Melito and Beaded finishing second and third respectively – the latter doing incredibly well in her first Group 1 event.

Danleigh was another favourite with the punters prior to Saturday but after a disappointing run finished in seventh spot, while Mic Mac, trained by Greg Eurell finished in fifth.

Melito and Mic Mac will be travelling to Brisbane for the next part of their season, to compete in the Winter Racing Carnival, with Gerald Ryan eying up the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on the 29th of May for Melito.

Also taking place on Saturday at the Randwick Racecourse was the headlining Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) which saw Jessicabeel clinch the title, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

GOLDEN SLIPPER RUNNER BENETEAU BACKING UP WITH 2010 CHAMPAGNE STAKES RUN ON SATURDAY

A surprise 15-horse capacity field of eager two-year-olds has been announced as the final field for this Saturday’s $300,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

One of four Group 1 features to light up the track at the final Sydney autumn carnival meeting, the 2010 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested affairs on the day and is due to jump at 2:15pm as race four.

There is any number of real chances in the juvenile showdown, including the current pre-race favourite Sasa sitting at $4.20 with IASbet.

The Tim Martin-trained Encosta De Lago filly has had just three career starts to date for one win but has received plenty of love from the punter’s backing her to soar out of barrier nine and lead all the way.

Close second favourite at $4.40 is the talented Beneteau in barrier five. Trained by Paul Messara, who is seeking just his second Group 1 win as a trainer following his success in the Coolmore Classic with stable reject Alverta, Beneteau ran an impressive fifth to Crystal Lily last start in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Golden Slipper.

With five career starts to his name, including an unlucky third in the Blue Diamond Stakes, Beneteau has strong claims on Saturday.

Other exciting prospects in the 2010 Champagne Stakes include last start Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes victor Yosei drawn ideally in barrier one, the Bart Cummings-trained Fernhill Handicap winner Kudakulari also drawn well in three, and consistent Show A Heart colt and Magic Millions winner Toorak Toff out wide in barrier 10.

Top trainers with multiple Champagne Stakes runners this year include Peter Snowden with Skilled (barrier 11) and Divorces (barrier 13); and Rosehill-based trainer David Payne represented by Praecido (barrier seven), long-priced filly Bombay (barrier 15) and Iron Lace (barrier eight) gaining a start following the scratching of Peter Moodys’ Another Sunday.

The feature race at Randwick on Saturday will be the $400,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), while other highlights will include the coveted $350,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and the $300,000 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

The News page on this site has detailed previews and the final fields for all of these great Randwick races running on Saturday.

*UPDATE: Leading trainer Anthony Cummings now has two runners starting in tomorrow’s Champagne Stakes after his emergency Shadows In The Sun gained a start following the scratching of the David Payne-trained Bombay.

*UPDATE: Pre-race favourite and Doncaster Mile winner Rangirangdoo has been scratched from tomorrow’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes leaving a wide open field.

Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse will be home to a premier line-up of Group races on Saturday as of the autumn carnival’s final race meeting gets underway.

As part of the action on Sydney Cup Day, nine great gallopers will take to the track at 2:55pm when race five, the $350,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), runs.

The 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is set to be a scintillating showdown between the two horses that ran the quinella in last Saturday’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile, the Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo and Anthony Cummings’ Road To Rock.

Following his win Rangirangdoo will start as the hot favourite currently at $2.35 for a win with IASbet.

The ever improving five-year-old Pentire gelding will jump out wide from barrier eight on Saturday with in-form hoop Nash Rawiller aboard, which if the track is soft will suit him well as he attempts back-to-back Group 1 glory.

Road To Rock, on the other hand, has drawn on the inside in barrier two. Due to be ridden by Damien Oliver, he has drifted out to $7 in the betting markets with many expecting the 2000m distance to be too testing for the son of Encosta De Lago.

The last run Road To Rock had over 2000m was in the Ranvet Stakes where he placed a well-beaten ninth behind Theseo.

But Road To Rock was beaten by just a half-neck in the Doncaster and Oliver, who has been freed for Saturday’s ride before starting his related suspension, weighed in 1kg over Road To Rock’s allocated Doncaster weight, which many said cost him the win.

Second favourite for the 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes currently paying $4.60 with IASbet is Monaco Consul, also drawn wide in barrier nine, who along with the Lee Freedman-trained Doctor Fremantle is one of only two runners not backing up a run in last weekend’s Doncaster Mile.

The three-year-old High Chaparral colt has had just one start in Australia this year when he placed an eye-catching third to Shoot Out in the Group 1 AJC Derby (2400m).

On Saturday, the Kiwi runner will be ridden by Jay Ford, who has not been aboard Monaco Consol since their upset win in the Spring Champion Stakes last year.

Other runners to watch include Villers Stakes winner Palacio De Cristal in barrier four and Rangirangdoo’s stablemate Triple Honour in barrier five with big race jockey Hugh Bowman aboard.

There are three other excellent Group 1 races taking place at Randwick on Saturday, with previews for all of them including the $400,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) available on the News page on this site.
