Portelli Thrilled to Book Avdulla for 2015 Rosebud

August 4th, 2015

Gary Portelli is thrilled to have secured the services of notable hoop Brenton Avdulla for the ride on Sebring Sun in Saturday’s 2015 The Rosebud (1200m) at Royal Randwick and is confident the booking will mean the difference in success.

Sebring Sun stamped his claims as one to watch through a short but competitive two-year-old campaign over the recent Sydney Autumn Carnival, but appears to have returned to racing an even brighter prospect after posting a maiden win in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1200m) first-up on July 29th.

Portelli is confident the now three-year-old is more than capable of a successful tilt at the 2015 Rosebud at Randwick this weekend; citing Avdulla’s experience with the horse whom he partnered to a close second in the Betting Season Plate (1000m) on debut in October last year.

“Hugh, Blake, Kerrin, McDonald, they’re all out,” Portelli told AAP.

“I’ve got Brenton Avdulla so I was on the front foot pretty quick.

“He’s ridden him before too. He was on him at his first start and I’ve had a good association with Brenton.

“This will probably be the weakest race he takes on from here on in, as far as black-type races go.

“I think he’s definitely up to this level.”

Sebring Sun was immediately returned to the paddock following his run in the Betting Season Plate, but returned this year for a credible third in the TAB Place Multi Plate (1000m) at Randwick on January 24th.

Having won a strong Warwick Farm trial in the lead up to his next start, the Sebring colt made a competitive transition to black type racing in placing a credible fifth in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) on February 14th; again placing fifth in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) before returning to the paddock.

Portelli is yet to set a particular path or target for Sebring Sun this time, but will consider races like the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in early September should early form and results warrant a berth.
