2015 Randwick Guineas the Target for Hallowed Crown

January 15th, 2015

A standout performer over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, co-trainer James Cummings has revealed classy Group 1 winner Hallowed Crown will be set for the featured Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) upon his return to competitive racing this year.

Securing an incredible record of four wins over his short five start career so far, Hallowed Crown found exceptional form over his three races through spring; taking out the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) first-up before chalking up a maiden victory at the highest level when overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 14 to win the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13th; returning to the paddock following a luckless run for fourth in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) on October 4th.

Thrilled with the condition of the Street Sense colt since his return from the paddock three weeks ago, Cummings told Racing Ahead the timing of the 2015 Randwick Guineas could not be better for his runner, who is likely to remain in Sydney for his entire autumn campaign.

“He’s fantastic, he’s doing really well for us; he’s licking the bin every night and galloped this morning over 800m,” Cummings said.

“He’s got a course-proper gallop lined up for Saturday at Randwick and it’s very satisfying to see home coming back with a good deal more meat on him but he feels to his rider just light on his feet.

“I gave Melbourne strong consideration and my only concern was running a pattern with a horse first-up when his really big assignments are in Sydney.

“We’re not going to go to Melbourne, although I suppose it would be foolish not to have him nominated for an Australian Guineas.

“The Randwick Guineas is a prime early target in his preparation and that will tell us a lot more as to where we go with him – that will be his watershed moment I think.

“The horse is really building up to that big Randwick mile … we’re pretty happy with him.”

Steadily building to the task over two Sydney barrier trials prior to his competitive debut, Hallowed Crown quickly stamped his claims as one to watch over a debut two start preparation over the 2014 autumn; comfortably taking out a minor over 1150m first-up before completing a successful transition to black type racing when finding the line a length and a half in the clear of closest rival Washington Heights in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on Day 1 of The Championships.
