Our Boy Malachi Primed for 2014 Razor Sharp Handicap

December 10th, 2014

A standout performer since first debuting to racing partway through 2011, Our Boy Malachi has been confirmed for the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) and arguably figures as the greatest chance of success at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Securing an incredible race record of 15 wins and one second place finish over just 17 competitive appearances on course so far, Our Boy Malachi began his racing career in Rockhampton before transferring to the stables of Team Hawkes at the beginning of the season.

Having won both the Turner Freeman Lawyers Flying Handicap (1100m) and Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) in his Sydney debut races, co-trainer Michael Hawkes said saddling a horse like Our Boy Malachi is effortless, and is confident the form and class displayed by the six-year-old in work over the last fortnight points towards another race win in the 2014 Razor Sharp Handicap.

“When they come to you having won 13 of 15, you know that they are a fairly good horse,” Hawkes told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“When he arrived he was in great condition and still had more to give.

“In a way he hasn’t surprised us with what he has done and in another way he has.

“It was good to see him get that first stakes win last time and this is the next step.”

Yet to settle on a specific path through 2015 with the Top Echelon gelding, Hawkes confirmed a return to the paddock was on the cards following the Razor Sharp Handicap.

“This will probably be his last run for this preparation and the 1200m will be a good test for him,” Hawkes added.

Running second in a minor over 1050m in Mackay on debut, Our Boy Malachi quickly stamped his racing authority in winning his next eleven starts over the next two years.

Finishing a luckless fifth when blocked for a run in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1110m) at Doomben on May 10th this year, Our Boy Malachi returned to the winner’s circle in two minor sprints before arriving in the Hawkes care earlier at the beginning of spring.
