Ball Of Muscle Ready for Randwick Appearance

December 10th, 2014

Charging home to secure an impressive victory in the Ranvet Sprint (1000m) first-up on November 8th, trainer Joe Pride is confident talented short-course specialist Ball Of Muscle will be hard to beat in Saturday’s TAB Rewards Plate (1000m) at Royal Randwick.

Finishing outside the places only a handful of times over his eleven race career so far, Ball Of Muscle jumped from the gates well in the Ranvet Sprint, settling in prime position on the heels of the race’s early leaders and displaying an exceptional turn of foot to find the line more than two lengths in the clear of closest rival Floral Insight.

Having considered a berth in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) on the same Randwick card this weekend for the Dubawi gelding, Pride is confident the TAB Rewards Plate figures as the ideal target in the lead-up to a black type berth in late December or early January.

“I wouldn’t do that to him, and there are a couple of nice races after this like the Canterbury Classic or the Takeover Target Stakes, but I want to see how he goes on Saturday first,” Pride told The Daily Telegraph.

“I’m a big believer in grabbing the money with them. If you look at the Listed race on Saturday, it’s worth $60,000 to the winner, this race is worth $48,000 to the winner, and you’d only get smashed by the handicapper for running in a Listed race. It’s not worth it.

“It’s only 1000m, so he’ll be fine.

“Had there been a race for him three weeks after his first-up run, I would have run him, but that wasn’t the case. He’s from a good fresh breed, that gives me confidence doing this, but it wasn’t for that reason.”

Yet to contest a black type events, Ball Of Muscle has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Glyn Schofield in the 2014 TAB Rewards Plate this weekend and will leave from the ideal barrier 7.
