Diamond Drille Primed for 2014 Toy Show Resumption

August 22nd, 2014

Breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident of first-up success for talented filly Diamond Drille in this weekend’s Group 3 Toy Sow Quality (1300m) at Royal Randwick.

Securing a commendable total of five wins and one minor places from just ten competitive race starts so far, Diamond Drille returned to the paddock after charging home to win the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick on April 19th.

Pleased with the way the Al Maher mare has taken to her time away from racing and return to work, Waterhouse declared Diamond Drille as the 2014 Toy Show’s standout runner, and is confident in success.

“She is very forward,” Waterhouse told Racing Ahead.

“I was only looking at her this morning and she is a big, strong daughter of Al Maher and she loves the wet.

“I know that she has the top weight in the race, but she is the quality horse in the race.

“Every time I asked her to step-up she stepped up in the most remarkable fashion and she is probably one of the most underrated race mares in Australia.”

Yet to settle on a path for the talented five-year-old beyond this weekend’s Toy Show Quality, Waterhouse said the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) is well and truly worth consideration, however the likes of major majors races including the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) are likely to figure.

“She will probably end up in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington or the Myer Classic,” Waterhouse said.

“The Myer Classic is the most obvious, but she is down for the Cox Plate and these races are not beyond her reach.”

Building in form and class on her way to her Queen Of The Turf triumph, Diamond Drille finished fifth in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 22nd, and while disappointing when eighth in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) on March 8th, responded well in winning the Group 3 Echo Aspiration Quality (1600m) most notably just one week later.
