2014 The Rosebud Nominations Released

August 4th, 2014

A field of just eleven three-year-olds has been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Listed The Rosebud (1200m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse, highlighted by several notable competitors over the autumn two-year-old season.

Experiencing a disappointing end to his maiden racing preparation and transferring to the care of leading trainer Chris Waller since, Law has been nominated for a first-up appearance in the 2014 The Rosebud.

Stamping his claims as one to watching over autumn when charging home to win the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on debut in October last year, Law returned to racing in typically slick form this year, winning the Adaptra Handicap (1000m) first-up before running a credible fourth in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on March 1st.

Gaining notable attention in betting markets ahead of the featured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th, the Denman colt was unable to handle the heavy going of the waterlogged Rosehill Gardens track and failed to beat a single runner home.

Having reportedly taken well to his time in the paddock and worked well upon arriving at Waller’s Randwick trainers, Law will be more than a chance of first-up success should he be allocated a favourable barrier at Wednesday’s draw.

Waller is set to dominate the final field for the 2014 The Rosebud, having also nominated exciting prospects Harrier Jet and Hero I Am.

Running on to finish fifth amongst classy competition in the Australian Turf Club 2.y.o (1000m) on debut in February, Harrier Jet returned to racing in July for a maiden race win in the TAB Early Quaddie 2.y.o (1200m) before placing a fighting third in the Inglis $5 million Race Series Handicap (1200m) last time out on July 19th.

Contesting three starts so-far, Hero I Am is poised to make his Australian racing debut in the 2014 The Rosebud, having so-far competed across the ditch in New Zealand.

Finishing sixth in the Listed Matamata Slipper (1200m) on debut, the Hussonet colt was impressive when winning the Retox Sports Bar Maiden (1200m) in just his second race starts, and was unlucky to finish seventh when blocked for a run in the Group 1 Oaks Stud Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out in March.

Trialling well at Rosehill two weeks ago, Waller is confident of a successful first-up showing this weekend.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is also set to be offered more than one chance to win the 2014 The Rosebud, having nominated talented stable mates Echo Prince and Nayeli.

Contesting just one race start for one victory, Echo Prince has made four barrier trial appearances so far, failing to finish outside the places in any.

Arguably Waterhouse’s best chance for success in The Rosebud, Nayeli won each of her first two race starts, including the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1100m) on February 1st, however returned to the paddock after failing to fire and 15th in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 22nd.

Underling the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) as the major target for the More Than Ready filly, Waterhouse is confident the racing traditional path will have Nayeli in peak condition for the September 13th feature race.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 The Rosebud is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
