April 12th, 2014

A talented field of 20 has been confirmed to line up for today’s major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on day 1 of the inaugural The Championships, offering race fans particularly generous odds for success.

Having returned to the track in strong condition this preparation, Weary has so-far received the strongest support from punters in betting markets for the 2014 Doncaster Mile, who have jumped all over an opening quote of nearly $8 to register the four-year-old as outright favourite and $5 market mover.

Securing three wins and four places from only eleven race starts, Weary debuted with back-to-back victories under the guidance of leading French trainer Harry Dunlop; working towards a hard-fought fourth in the Group 3 Prix De La Porte Maillot (1400m) before being transferred to the care of current trainer Chris Waller.

Finishing third in the TAB rewards Maiden (1400m) on debut in Australian on February 15th, the Astronomer Royal gelding stamped his claims as one to watch this season when producing a strong turn of foot to finish second to fellow Doncaster Mile acceptor Messene in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m), before strolling clear to win last weekend’s Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) and gain a ballot-free entry into this weekend’s major.

Allocated the slightly awkward barrier 13, Waller is confident of maiden success at the peak of racing for Weary in the Doncaster Mile, with Tommy Berry confirmed to take the ride

Yet to be defeated in two race starts this preparation, Messene has secured an impressive total of nine wins and two places from twelve race starts to date.

Returning to racing with a strong turn of foot to win the Listed National Sprinter (1400m) first-up on March 9th, the Lonhro gelding stamped his claims as a Doncaster Mile frontrunner when strolling home to win the Ajax Stakes by nearly three lengths last time out.

Allocated a race-low 52.5kgs, Messene will have to overcome the wide barrier 18 this afternoon and will be partnered by in-form jockey Corey Brown.

Receiving a decent share of wagers over the last 24 hours, Royal Descent has registered as outright third favourite in betting markets for the 2014 Doncaster Mile, currently offered at generous $8.50 odds.

Building a name as a wet-weather specialist, Royal Descent is arguably offered her best chances of success this time in, having finished fourth in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) and fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) prior to today’s major.

Amassing four wins and five places from on 14 race starts, the Redoute’s Choice mare was one of the standout performers of the 2013 autumn; winning the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) on the last edition of Derby Day before strolling home to win the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) by an incredible 10 lengths.

While having to leave from the wide barrier 20 in the 2014 Doncaster Mile, Royal Descent is likely to settle in ideal position before making a move in the final straight.
