The four-year-old is having her first-up start for this preparation after a short spring racing carnival campaign.

Driefontein won her first-up start in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes, before posting a fifth and fourth placing, respectively, in her next two runs.

She will now open her Magic Millions preparation as top weight, carrying a huge 61 kilograms in today’s race.

Tulloch Lodge‘s Mark Newnham is hopeful she can overcome her big weight in the Flying Handicap.

“Originally we were told she was going to carry 59 kilos but then the field changed a bit and she has the 61,” Newnham said.

Newnham has chosen jockey Nash Rawiller to ride Driefontein.

“With Nash you are not carrying much dead weight and you get the best,” Newnham said.

“She’s not the right horse to claim on and she needed the run prior to going to the Magic Millions as well.”

Rawiller was once Gai Waterhouse‘s number one stable jockey, however, he has recently gone freelance and was replaced by the up and coming Tommy Berry.

The Waterhouse-trained Driefontein is yet to have a summer race plan set in stone.

“We’ll let Gai decide which race she contests closer to the event,” Newnham said.

Driefontein has won five of her 18 race starts and has earned more than $1.67 million in prize money during her career.
