2010 The Metropolitan Race Preview

September 30th, 2010

The Metropolitan race will run on Saturday as a feature event of Epsom Handicap Day, with 13 contenders that will battle it out over 2400 metres.

Topping the early odds is Herculian Prince at $3.20 to win at Ladbrokes.com.au, starting from barrier 6 and carrying 55.5kg. Herculian Prince had a win in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) recently, but then came fifth in the Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) last weekend. Nevertheless, he’s had good performances over many of the other top contenders, isn’t carrying much more than the majority of the competition, and is starting from a decent barrier.

Close behind in The Metropolitan odds is Mr Charlie at $4.80 to win, starting in barrier 9 with 54kg. Most of Mr Charlie’s biggest successes have been in longer distance races, including a 2100 metre run in the wet. An impressive performance in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes has given punters faith in this runner, but he’s hardly a lock.

No Wine No Song is in the odds at $7.00 despite a barrier 1 draw and recent Colin Stephens Quality win. However, it’s understandable when you consider he’ll be carrying 57kg while the rest of the field carry 1.5 to 2kg less. Regardless, these early odds will likely narrow as the race approaches, especially once punters remember that the gelding has already won longer races than The Metropolitan carrying this weight and more starting from a worse barrier.
