2010 Epsom Handicap Preview

September 30th, 2010

The Group 1 Epsom Handicap will run this Saturday with a capacity field set to contend the race.

A 1600 metre event, the Epsom Handicap is the highlight of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, making it one of the most important Randwick races.

Topping the early odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Trusting at $5.00 to win, starting in barrier 9 and carrying 52 kilos. A recent second placing behind More Joyous in the Group 1 George Main Stakes proved that Trusting has become competitive at the 1600 metre mark this season.

Behind Trusting are both Neeson and Firebolt at $7.00. Neeson will start from barrier 4 and Firebolt will start from barrier 21, with both carrying 52kg. Neeson impressed in the Tramway Handicap, but then faltered with a sixth place finish in the Shannon Stakes. Firebolt is the only horse in this race coming off a win, having won the Shannon Stakes a few weeks ago. If it weren’t for the disastrous barrier draw, Firebolt would surely be the Epsom Handicap favourite.

At $9.00 is Once Were Wild, who has disappointed somewhat in the Spring season after an incredible campaign early this year. Recently, the mare finished a close second in the Mona Lisa Stakes, but then finished eighth from thirteen in the Shannon Stakes. With 52.5kgs, you could be forgiven for discounting Once Were Wild for the win, but the barrier 5 draw and good record over longer distances should keep you considering her in your Epsom Handicap box trifecta bets.

For those who want a real gamble, consider a bet on Hidden Wonder at $101.00 to win. A very unlikely chance in her first Group race run, Hidden Wonder has plenty of experience at this distance, including several races in the wet. With possible showers forecast for Saturday, a bet on Hidden Wonder now could pay off substantially.
