2010 Craven Plate Preview

September 30th, 2010

The only Group 3 race on the Epsom Handicap Day card will be the Craven Plate, a 2000 metre open handicap run that has drawn 7 contenders.

Triple Honour is the dominant favourite in the early market odds over at Ladbrokes.com.au, priced at $1.90 to win. While Triple Honour has yet to pull off a win this season, he has been going through a perfect lead up to the Craven Plate, with a recent second place in the 1900 metre Hill Stakes his last performance. A barrier 4 draw doesn’t put Triple Honour at a disadvantage, so this could easily be his race to lose.

The only runner even slightly close to Triple Honour in the Craven Plate odds is Purple, who is priced at $3.80. Purple placed third just behind Triple Honour in the Hill Stakes, and also managed a third place ahead of him in the Chelmsford Stakes, but just a fourth placing behind him in the Warwick Stakes. The Chelmsford Stakes performance shows that Purple could take this race if everything goes right for her, but it is certainly not a likely outcome.
